April 5th gINT Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting: Data Transfer
Thank you to all who attending our SIG webinar: Data Transfer.
We have posted a video of the SIG webinar on our Bentley learn site and it is available here. You do have to have a Bentley profile to access the video. If you do not have one you can create one free of charge when prompted after clicking on the link.
The following is a summary of the Q&A session:
Q: Can an XML file be used as a source or target in the correspondence file tool?
A: Not at this time. gINT can import/export files in the following formats: .CSV, .XLS, .XLSX, .TXT, .DAT, and .AGS
Q: Please explain again how to combine two source tables in with the correspondence file tool.
A: Click on the “Add Group” Button located under the Target file. You know the group has been added as there is a Target Table name with a number in parenthesis after. For example: Lithology (2)
Q: How would I map a component sample description to a single text field?
A: You would be best to use a Library Component Table and the function ComponentDesc() to combine a component description to a single text field. In the Data Design Manual in the gINT Communities site (available here) there is a section on Component Lithology Descriptions. The same functions used to create a single description on a report are used to make a component description a single text field. The component model can be applied to any table in gINT with components including the sample table.
Q: How can I add the depths on the output file?
A: gINT requires a depth field for any depth related entity such as sample, lithology, or well. The depth field should be there already if you are using a gINT file.
Q: I am really interested in knowing more about the gINT civil tool - where can I find more out about this?
A: Videos about gINT Civil Tools are available by clicking here. Also, the July 5th SIG will feature gINT Civil Tools.
Q: For the "Import from Database" box - is the "Database" file something I've developed or is there a template for this?
A: The database is an Access database (typically), and can be one you created.
Q: How do you export the hatches from any lithology to CAD Hatches? Like SAND for example.
A: gINT, at this time, does not have CAD compatible hatches. When you export a report, the symbols are individual elements.
Q: I want to add the depth of the units on the output file for example pdf
A: The question you ask is related to a PDF. Which is typically used for a report output and not data. This is a different topic. However, it is possible. You have to print the information on the report (be it a fence or log) you are printing to a PDF. For example, if you are doing this for a fence, you would use the Text with Depth entity and use <<TableName.Depth>> as the Text Expression and Depth Expression. For more information consult our Fences Tutorial on the gINT Communities site (click here) and go to the “Adding Text vs. Depth Columns”.
July 5th gINT Special Interest Group (SIG) Meeting : gINT Civil Tools Essential for Subsurface Evaluation
Thank you to all who attending our SIG webinar: gINT Civil Tools Essential for Subsurface Evaluation.
We have posted a video of the SIG webinar on our Bentley learn site and it is available here. You do have to have a Bentley profile to access the video. If you do not have one you can create one free of charge when prompted after clicking on the link.
The following is a summary of the Q&A session:
Annotation:
Q: Can we not have the "Borehole ID"? just the PointID value?
A: The next commercial release will allow users to have only the PointID Value.
Q: Is there a tool to create "labels" for the BHs? By that I mean be able to set the txt height/width, font type, formatting, which properties to show (name, E, N, surface elevation, etc.).. and store that label formatting for reuse? we had "labeling" tools in GEOPAK that could assemble a label and then annotate everything using that label style. I want the labels stacked and to the right of the BH point. for plans production, it'll be required
A: Yes, when we use the annotation functionalities (Annotate Borehole or Annotate Depth related item) it creates an annotation style that can be modified and reused just as an ordinary annotation style.
Data Management:
Q: Why are levels being created instead of picking levels from a dgnlib?
A: gINT Civil Tools can create levels based on material or readings, or types. We recognize that users may have several needs. Users can set up a dgnlib with predefined levels using material types or other geotechnical information (sampler type, environmental reading type, etc.). However, when mapping the information from gINT, users will still need to map which level name options. If the names are the same as levels in the dgnlib, then that level will have the pre-defined characteristics such as assigned colors for the material, etc.
Q: Where did you set this color equals this material type?
A: In gINT Civil Tools you can change the color assigned to a level using the Level Manger
Q: What is the best method to set a library for color of different soil types?
A: This is v8i but the information and method are still correct in how to set a library for different materials: https://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/8861/levels-and-level-libraries
Q: Where is the "legend" that says that this color is this material type?
A: In gINT Civil Tools the information is stored in the level Manger. At this point there is no easy way to create a legend. However, it is possible to extract the Level Manager info into an Excel table, and you can after import the Excel table using the Place Table function.
Visualization and Modeling:
Q: Can you transfer elevation information from an imported terrain model back to the gINT database using this tool?
A: No. Elevation is only transferred back to gINT when you place a new point.
Q: Can the terrains be exported to ASII XYZ files?? (tops & bottoms of strata) DTM or TIN files?
A: In the next version the option to export terrains to LandXML files (.xml) will be available.
Q: Can strata terrains be viewed in cross sections?
A: When cross sections are available in the next release, you will be able to see subsurface terrains in the cross sections.
Q: What does the option "use Existing Ground" do when creating those surfaces? Does it use an interpolation to form the subsurface relative to existing ground?
A: "Use Existing Ground" will modify the terrain so that no triangles from the new terrains are created above the actual ground terrain.
Q: Can this program calculate volumes of lithology?
A: Not in the current versions. However, in the next commercial release users will be able to create meshes, and thus calculate volumes.
Q: Instead of solid colors for each soil layer can you use a cell/pattern?
A: Not in 3D views as the cell does not translate will to 3D. However, it will be available in 2D cross sections.
Product:
Q: Is the GeoPak geotechnical tool going away?
A: Yes. It, and the other Civil Applications (InRoads, MX Roads), are being phased out to the single product OpenRoads.
Q: When is gINT civil tools v2 out?
A: The anticipated release is the fall of 2017.
Q: Is gINT civil tools covered under the enterprise license?
A: At this time, all current users of gINT Professional and Professional Plus can download and use gINT Civil Tools Professional or gINT Civil Tools Professional Plus at no additional fee. The version of gINT Civil Tools being used must match current gINT licensing.
Q: Will the next version use the gINT library report for fences?
A: No. But there are plans in work to allow access to the library to display data calculated from fields in gINT such as N-value.

gINT 10.00.00.60 Announcement
Dear gINT Users,
We are aware of an issue with gINT build 10.00.00.60 which was released January 18, 2018.
This version was pulled from SELECT on March 2, 2018.
The issue affects all levels of gINT (Logs, Professional, and Professional Plus).
You can check your gINT version by going to Windows Settings => Apps and scrolling down to gINT. The version is written there.
If you have version 10.00.00.60 installed, the error involves gINT finding the registry file. Symptoms of the error are:
Upon opening gINT (or closing gINT, a run time error appears. “Run-time error '-2146233088 (80131500)” appears and gINT closes. Additional information can include
- Error in gINT_Software.Library.Settings.UserSettings.Save:Error in .ctor : Access to the path 'C:\Users\Public\Documents\Bentley\gINT\System\settings\registry.xml' is denied.
- Error in gINT_Software.Library.Settings.UserSettings.Save:Error in .ctor : Could not find a part of the path ‘C:\...\settings\registry.xml’.
- Error in gINT _Software.Library.Settings.UserSettings.Load:Objecr reference not set to an instance of an object.
- There may be other variations regarding the registry.
Additionally, it is possible that after closing, there is still a version of gINT running in the background of the user’s PC. This can affect licensing and count as additional license usage.
Also gINT may not run again unless the new registry file is deleted.
If gINT is running in the background of a machine, users can close it from the Task Manager.
The registry error will not corrupt data files.
The solution, until we post a version with the solution to this issue, is to uninstall gINT version 10.00.00.60 and install gINT version 10.00.00.50. gINT version 10.00.00.50 does not have this issue.
Please know that we are currently addressing the issue and are working to post a new version with the resolution. The updated version will address this specific issue only. We will notify users when the updated version is posted.
If you have questions or concerns, please email me at katie.aguilar@bentley.com. Please include your name, company, contact information, and question/concern. I will get back to you.
Sincerely,
Katie
gINT 10.00.00.64 Announcement
Dear gINT Users,
Bentley released gINT version 10.00.00.64 believing that it had fixed the registry issue as seen in gINT version 10.00.00.60.
We have heard from 2 users of the registry error still occurring. It was decided to pull the version to prevent further issues.
If you are using gINT version 10.00.00.60 or 10.00.00.64 please remove the version and revert back to 10.00.00.50, which is available for download at our Software Downloads page here.
Please be assured that this error does not affect your data.
We are currently investigating the issue.
If you have questions or concerns, please email me at katie.aguilar@bentley.com. Please include your name, company, contact information, and question/concern. I will get back to you.
Sincerely,
Katie
gINT is Alive and Growing!
Let’s talk gINT and growth. In short where have we been and where are we going.
Where we’ve been
gINT was founded in 1985 to provide centralized data management and reporting for geotechnical subsurface projects of all types. The software automates many repetitive tasks, eliminates redundant data entry, and dramatically increases productivity. Over time it has changed from a DOS to ACCESS base, adding SQL server. And even though gINT is 34 years young, it’s still a workhorse of a database management system with a powerful reporting engine.
As technology and workflows advance and continue to do so at rapid pace. gINT is staying in step so geoprofessionals can continue to easily communicate and collaborate with other civil professionals. In 2016 Bentley released gINT Civil Tools. This sister product has added 3D visualization and analysis and is the first member of what will be an expanding gINT family of applications, bridging the gap for geoprofessionals to enable the BIM workflow.
Where we’re going
Looking forward, we will be moving gINT from a desktop application to an enterprise application with the addition of cloud based modules. The first module will be announced at our upcoming Year In Infrastructure (YII) event this fall.
Want to stay up to date on gINT enhancements, best practices and connect with Bentley experts/ industry peers? Check out some of our upcoming virtual events:
